MaxPreps names Owen Twesme Colorado’s male athlete of the year
Owen Twesme continues to earn accomplishments even after concluding his preps career.
MaxPreps named the Palmer Ridge graduate Colorado’s male athlete of the year Monday. Twesme was one of 50 male athletes in the country – one for each state – to earn the title.
According to Kevin Askeland’s MaxPreps article, chosen athletes “were selected either for exceptional all-around success across multiple sports or for achieving elite, national-level distinction in a single sport.”
Twesme recently wrapped his high school career with back-to-back 4A state shot put titles and broke the 29-year-old state record set in 1997 with his final throw this season. Twesme launched his shot put 60 feet, 11 inches at Jeffco Stadium on May 14 to break Carlos Tarin’s record, who set the mark for Mullen.
The Montana State signee also has a personal record throw of 61-9 which Twesme threw at the Pueblo Twilight event a week prior to the state meet in Lakewood. Twesme placed fourth at state in discus at 162-5.
For his senior year and at Colorado meets, Twesme finished first in all eight competitions and has not placed outside of the top four in shot put since his junior year.
Twesme also shined on the Bears’ offense and defense and helped Palmer Ridge achieve a 13-1 football record and state runner-up trophy. During his three-year varsity stint with the Bears, Palmer Ridge went 36-4.
During his football career with the Bears, Palmer Ridge never experienced a multigame losing streak and crushed its opponents. From 2024-26, which spans Twesme’s time on varsity, the Bears outscored opponents 1,596-493.
