‘An absolute joke’: Sexual assault charges dropped in Colorado Springs sex trafficking case
A Colorado Springs mother of a disabled woman allegedly manipulated into prostitution that almost killed her may not get the justice she was seeking.
Going by C.M. to protect her daughter’s identity, the mother sought a trial for the man she believes is responsible for sexually assaulting and trafficking her daughter, who has intellectual and developmental disabilities, to sex buyers. Prosecutors recently dismissed the most serious charges against the defendant, Tyson Craig, meaning he would likely serve much less time behind bars than previously thought if found guilty of the remaining counts he faces.

Colorado Springs police arrested Craig, 49, in July 2025 after investigators tied him to the pimping and sex trafficking of C.M.’s daughter, who was 21 at the time.
The lead investigator in the case testified in court that it was “obvious” Craig took advantage of the woman’s disabilities to manipulate her into selling herself to four or five sex buyers on a daily basis. After allegedly hooking her on crack and other drugs, Craig used her addiction as a form of coercion to continue the pimping, the detective said.
The alleged trafficking went on for months until the woman was hospitalized for sexually transmitted infections that put her into septic shock and almost killed her, The Gazette previously reported.
In May, C.M. said she learned that prosecutors dropped the sexual assault charges against Craig. After that, her hope for justice for her daughter, of whom she has legal guardianship, dissipated.
“This is why victims don’t talk. Why would women come forward if there’s no real consequences?” C.M. said.
Sexual assault charges dropped
In October 2025, Deputy District Attorney Ruben Dufour argued before Judge Frances Johnson that the state met “all of the elements” for the charges, including the now-dismissed counts. Johnson agreed and ruled that the case could proceed to trial.
Craig’s trial is set for September, but attorneys said in court Thursday that a plea deal is still on the table.
The District Attorney’s Office dropped four counts related to the sexual assault of an at-risk person in the case against Craig, court records show.
Ranging from class 2-4 felonies, the charges would have Craig serve a minimum of 22 years in prison and a maximum of 66 if found guilty, state sentencing guidelines show.
Without those charges, guidelines show Craig could receive a maximum of 33 years if found guilty.
C.M. called what’s happening “an absolute joke.”
“He did assault (my daughter). Once you talk to her, you know that’s exactly what happened,” she said.
What led to Craig’s arrest?
Investigators claim that Craig used Facebook to advertise several women to sex buyers. C.M.’s daughter told police that she was so addicted to drugs that she would let “whatever happen to her.” She alleged that Craig sexually assaulted her several times and would hit her at least once a week.
Detectives linked Craig to at least three profiles on Facebook, which have been independently verified by The Gazette. A Facebook profile named “Tieson Craig” shows pictures of several women in lingerie, and C.M.’s daughter is listed in the “friends” section under all of his accounts.
Another profile has a picture of a Crips hat and several pictures of Craig. Law enforcement databases confirmed his connection to the street gang, according to Craig’s arrest affidavit.
Investigators tied pictures of women found on Craig’s Facebook accounts to several online prostitution websites that provide various services, including “GFE” (girlfriend experience).
Alleged chat logs between Craig and sex buyers show the defendant talking about a person investigators believe is C.M.’s daughter.
“I’ll take you to this white girl that I know is down,” Craig allegedly said, to which the buyer replied: “I’m with it” and “What she look like?” A couple minutes later, investigators say a video call occurred and then hours later the buyer said he’s “here.”
Craig is being held in the El Paso County jail on a $250,000 bond. His next court appearance is set for July 9, when he is expected to make a decision on whether to accept the plea deal.
