2 people dead in incident at Bent County Correctional Facility; statewide visitation suspended

Visitations have been suspended at all Colorado Department of Corrections facilities across the state following an incident at the Bent County Correctional Facility that left two people dead and sent a third person to the hospital, according to multiple reports.

In a statement on the CDOC’s Facebook page, the agency announced it was investigating the incident, which reportedly took place on Saturday at the Las Animas facility. No staff members were injured in the incident, according to department spokeswoman Alondra Gonzalez.

“This is a precautionary decision intended to support department operations and maintain the safety and security of our facilities,” the post stated. “There are no known threats to the surrounding communities at this time.”

CDOC officials canceled visitation for “close custody” inmates at Limon Correctional Facility from June 5-7. Close-custody inmates require a higher level of supervision than most other inmates.

Gonzalez would not comment on whether the two suspensions were related, citing an ongoing investigation.

The Bent County facility remains on lockdown, officials said.
