Traffic roundup: Overnight lane closures ahead on I-25
This week, drivers should look out for new closures and ongoing construction around the Pikes Peak area. Here are the highlights.
Interstate 25
Traffic will slow next week with intermittent lane blockages between Fillmore Street and Garden of the Gods Road for bridge work.
The overnight double-lane closures will start Friday heading southbound. Saturday will see the closures switch to the northbound lanes, with additional northbound closures tentatively planned for Monday. On Tuesday, another southbound closure is also tentatively planned.
Traffic will be reduced to one lane during the closures, which start at 7 p.m. All lanes will be back open by 6 a.m., according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
8th Street
Drivers could see some impacts coming up on South 8th Street just west of downtown Colorado Springs. The city is installing water valves as part of an ongoing project to replace the street’s 24-inch water main.
During the work, the city said to expect lane and side street closures around Moreno Avenue and Garner Street.
On Monday and Tuesday, westbound Moreno Street west of 8th will be closed. Drivers can detour on Lower Gold Camp Road. Tuesday through Wednesday, Garner Street will be down to one lane with flaggers directing traffic.
Then, on Wednesday and Thursday, westbound Moreno east of 8th will also be closed. Traffic will detour on Abbot Lane to access 8th and Moreno westbound.
South of the work area, the center lane closure of 8th will remain, which does not allow left turns.
Hopeful Drive
Neighborhood drivers hopeful for the reopening of the Hopeful Drive Bridge will be pleased on Monday.
After a months-long bridge replacement project, the road north of Blissful Circle will reopen Monday. The project was a major part of the Park Vista Drainage Improvements Project.
While vehicles will be able to cross the new bridge, pedestrians still have a longer wait. The sidewalks will open after bridge rail installation later this year. Foot traffic can still use the temporary pedestrian bridge east of the roadway.
Hancock Expressway
This past Monday, construction impacts started on the Hancock Expressway at South Academy for a waterline installation.
The eastbound single lane is expected to be closed for about two weeks. The closure significantly impacts bus stop locations along the corridor. More details can be found at MMTransit.com.
Woodmoor Drive
Work will start on Monday on a new pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Woodmoor Drive and Willow Way Park in Monument. According to the El Paso County Department of Public Works, traffic flow will be maintained throughout the project’s duration.
The pedestrian crossing is one of 24 projects planned throughout the county to improve pedestrian safety using federal grant funding.
