Suspect connected to February 2024 homicide set for May trial
The man allegedly responsible for the February 2024 shooting that left 55-year-old Omar Olmedo dead is set for a May 2026 trial, unless a plea agreement is reached in the months leading up to it.
Marquise Hutt, 39, was arrested in early December 2024 after several months of investigation. He has been charged with first-degree murder, court records show.
Hutt did not enter pleas of guilty or not guilty on Tuesday. The court proceeded with the case anyway, but set a Jan. 27 hearing to see if a plea agreement can be reached before the case goes to trial.
A two-week trial is set to commence on May 11, unless a resolution is reached beforehand.
In the early hours of Feb. 29, 2024, police were called to The Lamplighter Mobile Homes near South Academy Boulevard. When they arrived, they said they found Olmedo lying on his back with a small pool of blood near him. The man also had blood on his face and arm.
Olmedo appeared unconscious and was transported to a local hospital shortly after police arrived. He died on March 5 after days on life support.
Hutt appeared in custody for the hearing, which was initially set up for Hutt to enter a plea. As of Tuesday, Hutt remains in El Paso County jail on a no-bond hold.
