The Brit Pub bringing authentic British experience to downtown Colorado Springs

Anglophiles, rejoice. A taste of the United Kingdom is coming to downtown Colorado Springs.

Designed to “feel like the kind of place you stumble into on any afternoon in England — warm, familiar and full of good company,” co-owner David “Nova” Nowakowski said in a news release, The Brit Pub officially opens its doors late Friday morning, offering guests an authentic British experience from the moment they enter.

“The pub is your second living room,” he told The Gazette. Nowakowski hails from Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. “We used to go down, like, if it’s happy hour back home, if it’s Sunday afternoon, the weekend, after church or whatever. You always met your friends … so it’s that kind of identity.”

Located on the first two floors of the Experience at Epicenter Apartments at 645 S. Sierra Madre St., the pub’s opening comes after eight months of construction. Retail incentive and building enhancement grants from the Downtown Development Authority supported the pub’s opening, the release said. The Brit Pub previously operated near University Village.

Visitors will find genuine touches of British culture throughout the new space.

Guests walk up to patio seating and fire pits directly outside the south end of Weidner Field. Dark and textured walls, English-made furniture, vintage pub signs, signed jerseys from English legend David Beckham and The Colorado Springs Switchbacks’ inaugural team, a restored 1936 K6 phone box that survived WWII in the U.K., and artwork that pays homage to notable Brits, including William Shakespeare and The Beatles, are among the carefully curated details.

The walls along the staircase leading to a relaxed upstairs lounge are decorated with football memorabilia — soccer, for the Americans — including scarves, jerseys and pennants from clubs across the world, with room for more, Nowakowski said.

“We want more. How cool would this be if someone is watching us on social media around the world, and they send a scarf from Croatia, Poland, wherever? How amazing would that be? You’re making a bond through the game of football,” he said.

The upstairs lounge, with views of the pitch at Weidner Field, offers a cozy space complete with a bar and a piano from the Colorado Piano Warehouse.

Across the way, a private event space called The Cavern takes its name — and a brick — from Liverpool’s famed original club where The Beatles’ popularity in the U.K. began.

Executive Chef Phil Griffin, whose extensive culinary career includes work with Michelin three-star chef Marco Pierre White in London, has created a traditional British menu including favorites like Scotch eggs, bangers and mash, fish ‘n chips and traditional Sunday roasts on Sundays. The pub carries imported and local Hogshead cask ales, British gins and imported spirits.

Apartment residents have their own private entrance and exit. Soon they’ll also be able to place digital orders that will then be delivered to their doors, Nowakowski said.

The pub will open seven days a week. It will show every Premier League football match as well as Switchback games, rugby, American football and the FIFA World Cup next year.

The Brit Pub is operated by the Brit Food Group, which also operates Codswallop British Fish ‘n Chips in Old Colorado City.

“This is the premier place to watch live football. … Football is ingrained in you when you’re in England. There’s a football club on every corner. It’s so important and everyone speaks that language … and it’s about a round ball,” Nowakowski said. “Everyone’s speaking the same language and playing this beautiful game that’s bringing everyone together.”

The Brit Pub opens at 11 a.m. on Friday.

At the new restaurant called The Brit Pub, one room pays tribute to the Beatles and is called The Cave after the first place that the Beatles played in London. In the room is a brick from the original club and and autograph by Paul McCartney. (Jerilee Bennett, The Gazette)
