Woodland Park School Board candidate column | Norm Michaels
In recent weeks, letters to the editor have attacked not only my ideas but my character. I appreciate that we live in a community where free speech allows for disagreement, but personal smears do nothing to improve our schools. What matters are results, vision, and trust.
When I decided to run for the Woodland Park School Board, it wasn’t for politics or personal ambition. I am a husband of 52 years, a retired Army officer, a disabled veteran, a former government engineer, and a small business owner in this community. I stepped forward because I believe God has called me to serve, to raise the standard of education for our children and to protect the voice of parents in their children’s schooling
Results, Not Rhetoric
Critics claim that the board under conservative leadership has “driven our district into the ground.” Yet the facts show a different story. Since 2019, Woodland Park’s academic performance has risen from about 59.7% to nearly 74%. That is real progress, achieved by focusing on strong academics, supporting teachers, and holding high expectations. My commitment is to continue raising those standards so every student leaves our schools ready for college, trade, or career.
Fiscal Responsibility and Transparency
Some opponents say I don’t understand finances. But my background tells a different story. For twenty years I commanded Army units responsible for budgets, logistics, and facilities. For another twenty years, I served as a Principal Engineer overseeing multi-million-dollar defense programs. I know how to do more with less, and as a school board director I will continue to prioritize classrooms, teachers, and vocational training while insisting on clear financial reporting. Transparency builds trust, and I welcome independent audits and public accountability.
Unity Through Parental Rights
The loudest accusation against me is that I am “divisive.” But protecting parental rights is not divisive, it is inclusive. Every parent, regardless of politics, deserves to be informed and have a voice in their child’s education. That is not ideology; that is common sense. We may not all agree on every issue, but we can agree that strong families build strong schools.
Standing for Students and Teachers
Our teachers are the backbone of this district. Even though they earn less than many counterparts in nearby counties, they stay here because they love their students and this community. I am committed to supporting them with the tools, training, and recognition they deserve. At the same time, I will continue to champion programs like Merit Academy, which prove that school choice can raise the bar for all students.
Moving Forward Together
It is easy for critics to tear down. It is harder to build. My promise is to focus on building: higher academic outcomes, fiscal responsibility, trust with parents, and safe schools where every child is respected.
I am not running to fight culture wars. I am running to give our children the tools they need to succeed in life. That is what unites us. That is why I humbly ask for your support.
