Southern Colorado will go through a “weather whiplash” during a chilly Friday with highs topping out in the 60s, a 20-30 degree difference from Thursday’s hot temperatures, according to Gazette news partner KOAA.
Skies will remain mostly cloudy Friday with a chance for rain across the Pikes Peak region in the morning, KOAA Meteorologist Alan Rose said. Areas of rain will be possible in the mountains and across the far Eastern Plains this morning.
The National Weather Service in Pueblo expects Friday to be a “tad soggy” with showers and storms spreading across the region through the afternoon as fall temperatures arrive, the weather agency said on a social media post.
Meanwhile, visitors to the summit of 14,115-foot Pikes Peak were greeted by snow Friday morning. The Weather Service said a half inch was expected. The snow is very light and wet with temperatures near freezing.
“It is kind of exciting since it’s the first accumulating snow of the year, but there’s nothing major expected,” said Weather Service Meteorologist Jaclyn Ehr.
Snow in August? On Pikes Peak, that’s no surprise. The mountain’s climate is famously unpredictable
According to the Colorado Department of Public Health, air quality in Colorado Springs will remain moderate Friday as smoke billows in from giant wildfires in Canada.
