Drowning victim at Eleven Mile State Park identified

A 33-year-old man has been identified as the drowning victim at Eleven Mile Reservoir last week, the Park County Coroner’s office announced Monday in a Facebook post.

Zachary Gursky, two others and a dog were reportedly paddleboarding in the reservoir around 1 p.m. Aug. 1. Colorado Parks and Wildlife reported that a large windstorm rolled through the park and knocked them all into the water around this time.

One person was wearing a life jacket and swam to shore while another was rescued by park rangers after tethering themself to the paddleboard.

Gursky, who was not wearing a life jacket, and the dog were found by CPW’s Marine Evidence Recovery Team 11 hours later.

There have been at least 10 water-related deaths in Colorado since May, according to unofficial numbers tracked through previous Gazette reporting.

An investigation remains ongoing.
