North Cheyenne Cañon to reopen Friday following roadway repairs

Roadway repairs

North Cheyenne Cañon is set to reopen to the public Friday afternoon after heavy rain washed away parts of a road that led to the canyon, the city of Colorado Springs announced.

The North Cheyenne Canyon Road has been repaired after heavy rain eroded roadway infrastructure, washing out a significant section of the road about 1.5 miles up the canyon from the Starsmore Visitor and Nature Center, officials said in a Thursday news release.

After waters receded, work immediately began to repair nearby infrastructure that contributed to the wash out, along with engineering and construction to build a retaining structure that will protect the roadway from future damage.

“We are grateful to the public for their patience and understanding as we completed this repair,” said Gayle Sturdivant, city engineer and Public Works deputy director. “While this full closure meant restricted access to the Cañon, it allowed our crews the opportunity to finish the repair in a safe manner.”

The project still has a few items needed before it’s completed, including a permanent guardrail. Intermittent lane closures will occur in the coming weeks.

“As always, roadway users are urged to use caution when travelling through the Cañon due to the narrow roadway, steep grade and sharp curves,” officials said in the release.
