Armed man in Pueblo West taken safely into custody
A 50-year-old man who had threatened to shoot it out with deputies was taken into custody “after hours of intense moments and impassioned negotiations,” according to the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office.
Pueblo County sheriff’s deputies responded at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday to a home in the 700 block of Sandusky Drive in Pueblo West on the report of an armed and suicidal man sitting in a vehicle in front of the residence.
When deputies arrived, the man, Jason Monett, 50, had gone back into his home where he had access to multiple weapons. Two other people were in the house at the time.
Deputies spoke with Monett and attempted to get him to come outside. He refused to leave, and threatened to shoot at deputies.
The other two people within the home were able to leave safely.
Deputies tried again to convince Monett to come out, but he continued to refuse. The deputies opted not to escalate the matter and left the home.
A little more than two hours later, Monett called the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Communication Center and asked to speak to the lieutenant on duty. Monett told the lieutenant he had firearms, and he was going to look for the lieutenant so he could shoot him in the head. He also threatened to go to the Pueblo West Sheriff’s Office substation and shoot it out with deputies. He told the lieutenant that if deputies attempted to do a traffic stop, it would “be bad for them.” He also said that if deputies came to his house, he would shoot at them.
The Sheriff’s Office said that Monett seemed to have driven by the Pueblo West Sheriff’s substation several times before returning to his home.
The County SWAT and crisis negotiations team were then called out to assist with trying to get Monett to surrender peacefully. After hours of negotiating, Monett agreed to come out of the home, and was taken into custody without incident. He was taken to a local hospital for medical clearance.
Due to his actions and the threats made, Monett was arrested for first-degree assault and was booked into the Pueblo County jail.
Deputies said they found 11 firearms, including handguns, long guns and rifles, along with assorted ammunition in Monett’s vehicle and residence.
The Sheriff’s Office said Monett’s guns and ammunition were taken for safekeeping.
“It’s pretty scary when you have someone armed with guns, threatening to shoot at deputies, and then going out to look for them,” said Pueblo County Sheriff David Lucero.
