Unity in the face of division | Guest column

The American way of life has always been grounded in the principles of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, values enshrined in the Declaration of Independence. These ideals have guided the nation’s history and remain central to the American identity. However, today, concerns grow that these freedoms are under threat, particularly from forces that seek to divide us and undermine the Constitutional rights that protect these principles. It is more crucial than ever that we come together as a community to preserve these values and remain united in safeguarding our freedoms.

At the heart of the American way of life is the belief that every individual is entitled to the inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. These rights form the foundation of our society, allowing people to live freely, think independently and seek fulfillment according to their own desires. The Declaration of Independence asserts that these rights are self-evident and granted by the creator, meaning they cannot be taken away by any government or external power. For generations, Americans have upheld these principles as the path to a just and prosperous society.

However, as the nation has evolved, so have the forces attempting to undermine these principles. In recent years, ideological divisions have intensified, fueled by various influences, including certain political ideologies. Some of these forces, particularly those aligned with communist ideals, seek to create fractures by pitting people against each other based on race, class or political beliefs. Such tactics of division threaten the unity necessary to protect our Constitutional rights. President George Washington, in his Farewell Address, warned about the dangers of political factions, saying, “The common and continual mischiefs of the spirit of party… are sufficient to make it the interest and duty of a wise people to discourage and restrain it.”

Washington understood that division could destabilize the nation and detract from the core principles of freedom and self-government.

Similarly, President John Adams recognized the fragility of liberty, stating, “Liberty, once lost, is lost forever.” These words remind us of the importance of actively protecting our freedoms from any threats. During times of division, it’s easy to lose sight of the values that unite us. If we allow ideological differences to tear us apart, we risk losing the very rights that define our nation.

To preserve the American way of life, we must come together as a community, focusing on what unites us—our Constitution and the rights it guarantees. We must remain vigilant against divisive forces, including those who seek to exploit our differences for their own benefit. Protecting our Constitutional rights must always be our top priority, as these rights allow us to live freely and pursue our dreams.

The American way of life is built on the enduring principles of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. As a nation, we must resist division and unite to protect the Constitutional rights that uphold these ideals. By heeding the wisdom of presidents Washington and Adams, we can ensure that the freedoms we cherish are preserved for future generations. Now is the time to unite—our liberty depends on it
