State Wrestling notebook: Amaya Hinojosa cruises in state return

DENVER – Amaya Hinojosa hasn’t dropped a match in Colorado in 726 days.

It’s an impressive feat that highlights the reign of dominance by the Widefield 120-pounder during her preps career.

Hinojosa cruised to the 5A girls semifinals Thursday at Ball Arena after a pair of pins in her opening round contests.

“The first one felt good and it was a good match to get my butterflies out,” Hinojosa said. “But I felt strong and fluid out there. I have high expectations for myself and I really want to meet them.”

Hinojosa missed her sophomore season due to a shoulder injury but advanced to the 115-pound finals as a freshman in 2023. She faced Discovery Canyon’s Mia Hargrove, who won the crown with a 4-0 decision win.

Since then, the nation’s No. 18-ranked 120 pounder continues to obliterate her opponents. Hinojosa (39-1) has won each match by pin, tech fall or forfeit this season. Of her 39 wins, 24 of Hinojosa’s pins occurred in under 60 seconds.

The lone defeat happened in the finals at the Lady Horns Classic in Amarillo, Texas, to Lubbock’s Madison Pena in a 6-3 decision in January.

Following the loss to Pena, Hinojosa has earned 16 pin-fall victories. In the state opener against Broomfield’s Aden Winholz, Hinojosa won in 38 seconds and in the quarterfinals, the Gladiators junior defeated Vista Ridge’s Hadley Stokes in 57 seconds.

“I try to just focus on myself. I focus on myself and performing to the best of my abilities,” Hinojosa said. “If I do that then it’s a good day for me.”

Sand Creek boys fourth in 4A after opening matches

Tristan Pino (106), DJ Snider (126), Daniel Evans (144), Brandon Dean (157) and Achilles Evans (190) all advanced to Friday’s semifinals after earning two victories in their opening round matches.

Evans opened the tournament with a pin and won the quarterfinal round with a 19-4 victory against Ibrahim Kabore of Silver Creek and the Scorpions have 47.5 points after the quarterfinals.

Widefield girls tied for fourth in 5A

Along with Hinojosa’s strong performance in the opening round, two more Gladiator competitors will join the junior in the semis.

Vivienne Arellano earned a pin and major decision win in the 100-pound bracket to advance to the semifinals.

Myka Martinez scored two pins in the opening rounds and advanced to the 155-pound finals Friday.

The Gladiators have 44 points and are 8.5 points behind second place Loveland.

Falcon’s Alan Cruz improves to 14-0

Cruz returned to Falcon’s line up late this season but hasn’t skipped a beat.

The 144-pounder earned an opening-round pin victory and followed with a 7-5 decision win in the quarterfinals to advance to Friday’s semis.

This comes just a year after Cruz said he had hip surgery.

“I got hurt and was out until regionals but I’m happy I still made it to the big show,” Cruz said. “While I was injured, all I could think about was how hungry I was for this. That’s gone through my head at every single practice and I’m hungry for this.”
