Pueblo man faces numerous charges after officer-involved shooting near Salida
A 54-year-old man was hospitalized and faces several charges including attempted murder of law enforcement after an officer-involved shooting Wednesday near Salida, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
Richard Borrego, of Pueblo, was shot in the right shoulder after he allegedly fired at law enforcement during a nearly three-hour standoff that began around 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Officers arrived to the home in an area west of Salida known as Garfield after a woman had escaped to a neighbor’s residence, according to a release sent Thursday by the CBI. The man refused commands to leave his home and barricaded himself inside.
Borrego allegedly fired at three Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office deputies and a Salida police officer from an upstairs window of the home, the CBI said, and law enforcement returned fire.
Officers used tear gas to take Borrego into custody. He was then taken to a local hospital and transferred to a Colorado Springs hospital, where he is being held under guard without bond.
No law enforcement officers were injured, the CBI said. All four who returned fire have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the officer-involved shooting investigation.
Borrego faces charges including two counts of attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer, two counts of first-degree assault in first degree, 18 counts of menacing, prohibited use of a weapon, third-degree assault and menacing.
