Up to 4 inches of snow expected in Colorado Springs Monday after warmest Dec. 8 on record

Colorado Springs residents will see up to 4 inches of snow and a steep drop in temperature on Monday following the city’s warmest Dec. 8 on record, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo.

Sunday’s high reached 68 degrees, far surpassing the average high temperature of 45 degrees and eclipsing the previous date record of 65 degrees, set on Dec. 8, 1970.

A cold weather system is expected to roll in on Monday, bringing freezing temperatures and 2-4 inches of snow, according to NWS meteorologist Kathy Torgerson.

“Right around noon or so is when we should see (the snow) blossoming over Colorado Springs,” Torgerson said. “By Tuesday morning it should be done; in fact, most of it could be done by midnight.”

The weather event could make for slick roads and hazardous driving conditions during the evening commute, she said.

“Temperatures will drop significantly enough that the snow will accumulate during the daylight hours,” Torgerson said. “It definitely warrants caution, so be prepared for slick roads at about the time you’re getting off work, if you get off work at 4 p.m.”

This season’s total snowfall has nearly tripled the normal amount for this time of year, the weather agency said. Colorado Springs has seen 22.8 inches of snow since July 1; the normal amount is about 8 inches. Last year at this time, the total snowfall was 10.8 inches.
