Fatal crash closes northbound I-25 north of Colorado Springs Wednesday morning
A fatal crash on Interstate 25 Wednesday morning shut down northbound lanes between Baptist Road and Colorado 105.
According to the CDOT map, northbound travelers were facing hour-plus delays before the roadway reopened at 2 p.m.
Colorado State Patrol received reports of a two-vehicle crash just after 10:30 a.m. The drivers initially moved their vehicles to the left shoulder .
During the drivers’ exchange of information, troopers report that a truck traveling at a high rate of speed collided with the vehicles involved in the first crash. One of the drivers was struck and landed in the southbound lanes of I-25, where he was run over by traffic and died.
The crash is being investigated by the Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit. If anyone witnessed the crash or has any information and have not spoken to investigators, call 719-544-2424. No charges have been filed at this time.
Reminder to ‘move over’
A separate crash on I-25 earlier Wednesday morning prompted law enforcement to send out additional reminders to move over for disabled vehicles to avoid potential collisions.
The right northbound lane of I-25 over Rockrimmon Boulevard was closed for safety repairs of a guardrail when a vehicle crashed into a parked contractor’s car just after 8:30 a.m.
The struck car and other repair crew vehicles had their yellow overhead lights and directional arrows on when the collision occurred, according to police. The driver was transported to a local hospital for serious non-life-threatening injuries.
Earlier this year, Gov. Jared Polis signed a law requiring all drivers to move over a lane whenever they encounter any still vehicle on a highway with its hazards flashing. According to the law, if a driver is unable to move over, they must slow down to at least 20 mph below the speed limit.
All states have a “Move Over Law” to protect emergency responders, but Colorado joined 19 other states that provide protections to all disabled vehicles as well. The penalty for failing to move over or slow down for a disabled vehicle includes a Class 2 misdemeanor traffic offense, with a possible fine of $150 and a 3-point license violation.
Each year, nearly 350 people are struck and killed in the U.S. while outside a disabled vehicle, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
In September , CDOT workers, Nathan Jones, 23, and Trenton Umberger, 43, in the Grand Junction area were killed as they were conducting roadside repairs, 23-year-old Nathan Jones and 43-year-old Trenton Umberger.
