Club Q memorial gathering planned as 2-year anniversary of tragedy nears
A gathering to memorialize the victims and honor survivors of the Club Q mass shooting is planned for Sunday outside the since-closed LGBTQ+ dance club at 3430 N. Academy Blvd., where a bias-motivated attack killed five people, injured dozens, and sent shock waves of grief and fear through Colorado Springs on Nov. 19, 2022.
The Sunday afternoon event, organized and hosted by the Springs’ Prism Community Collective, will provide an opportunity for victims’ families, survivors, and the community to collectively grieve and continue to process the tragedy, two years ago, that claimed the lives of Daniel Aston, Kelly Loving, Ashley Paugh, Derrick Rump and Raymond Green Vance, said Amber Carlton, communications manager for Community Health Partnership, Prism’s parent organization in the Springs.
A community and survivor-led resource center, Prism opened over the summer of 2024 with a mission of supporting those impacted by the Club Q tragedy, as well as the greater LGBTQ+ community in the Pikes Peak Region. Since its opening in June 2024, Prism has offered services, resources and opportunities for connection to the Springs’ LGBTQ+ community.
The Sunday gathering is “just a time for people to reflect and talk about things, share memories, and a time of healing for the community,” said Carlton.
Speakers on Sunday include Carter Cadena, aka Hysteria Brooks, a frequent Club Q drag performer, and the Rev. Mallory Everhart, pastor of Vista Grande United Church of Christ, an open and accepting place of worship in the Springs.
Sunday’s event isn’t about who takes the mic, though, at a gathering that will also feature refreshments, and an opportunity, for those who choose to do so, to share memories.
“It’s just a time for people to come together and reflect and talk about things, to just remember those that we lost and support the victims’ families and the survivors,” Carlton said.
After a brief vigil Sunday, Carlton said attendees will be invited to share stories and add flowers to the shrine that sprung up at site in the days after the shooting.
In addition, Prism will offer extended hours, noon-9 p.m. on Nov. 19 and 20, during which those in need of support can “drop in” to connect with on-site resources including representatives able to assist with access to critical support needs, one-on-one peer support specialists, and connections with a range of other mental health, emotional and spiritual support networks.
The owners of The Q by the Orbit Lounge, founded by former Club Q employees and shooting survivors Michael Anderson and Tara Bush at the Satellite Hotel on South Academy Boulevard, are hosting a memorial event on Tuesday, the anniversary.
A Night of Resilience and Strength: Two Years After Club Q is an evening of “solidarity and community” to remember the tragedy and celebrate the community a hate-motivated massacre attempted to sever, starting 8 p.m. Tuesday, at 411 Lakewood Circle in Colorado Springs.
