Want a ‘Star Trek’ wedding? This Colorado Springs-area man can officiate
Long-haul truck driver Anthony Perdue loves a good wedding.
Particularly one where he can don a Jedi or “Star Trek” costume and officiate.
A couple of years ago, the Fountain resident decided to marry his two passions: podcasting and cosplay. He had already been ordained so it was easy to hang a shingle, Fantasy Weddings, and give it a catchy tagline: “Because everyone deserves a fantasy wedding.”
“Speaking in front of people is something I’m fairly good at,” he said from the cab of his truck while driving a load of frozen food from Alabama to Mississippi. “I had been a cosplay fan for a long time — why not put the two of them together and do what I’m interested in? I could talk and help people do something meaningful for each other and have fun dressing up at the same time. What’s not to like?”
His love of officiating started a half-dozen years ago when one of his daughters considered getting married. To help the couple save cash, he got ordained. Though the wedding never happened, he had another daughter who sprang an engagement on the family and asked her dad to officiate.
“I got so many comments about how fun and inviting the ceremony was,” he said. “I wrote the script. I enjoyed myself. I started thinking how can I do this more?”
Edging closer to retirement and wanting a hobby to pursue, he busied himself with building handmade, movie-quality, multithousand-dollar costumes.
His Jedi is an original character, not one created by “Star Wars” director George Lucas or Disney, and his two “Star Trek” admiral costumes are from the original series and “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” Perdue also is building a fourth costume: a furry skunk named Reverend Pew, which will take about a year more to finish.
Perdue also does religious ceremonies in any denomination and faith. He’s done 32 weddings, six of which were in costume, including his first one at a park in Kansas City, Mo., where he wore his Jedi costume and married a groom and bride dressed as Han Solo and Princess Leia.
Perdue will travel to officiate, though mileage will cost you if your wedding is more than 75 miles outside Colorado Springs.
Officiating starts at $275 and gets more expensive if he needs to write the vows. Using a different language, such as Klingon, will also jack up the price. And he charges a nonrefundable $275 for damage insurance against his costumes.
