The Park County Coroner’s Office has identified the missing veterinarian whose body was recovered after an ATV ride in the Pike-San Isabel National Forest this week.

Shelley Ekstrom, a 60-year-old from Conifer, died Tuesday as the result of an ATV crash, according to a social media post by the Park County Sheriff’s Office. Her body was recovered Thursday.

Ekstrom and her neighbor left their Conifer homes on ATVs on Tuesday, according to the nonprofit Justice Takes Flight. The neighbor was found Wednesday and given medical attention, but Ekstrom was not located, the nonprofit said.

The Park County Coroner’s Office said it received a call about a missing person and a fatal ATV crash in the Pike-San Isabel National Forest near the Park County and Teller County line Wednesday, according to the social media post.

Justice Takes Flight described Ekstrom was “a well-established veterinary doctor with many ties to the communities of Arvada and Conifer as well as out-of-state.”

Ekstrom was a veterinarian at the Indian Tree Animal Hospital in Arvada, according to reports.

The Sheriff’s Office said this was the second fatal ATV crash in the past two months in Park County.

“We urge everyone to wear appropriate safety gear, reduce speed, and ensure familiarity with both your vehicle and the trails before riding,” the Sheriff’s Office said on its Facebook page.
