Air Force Academy freshman dies on campus
An Air Force Academy cadet died on campus Wednesday night.
Freshman Avery Koonce, 19, of Taylor, Texas, was found unconscious in her dormitory, according to a news release from the academy.
“We lost an incredible teammate last night — while only with us for a short time, Avery positively impacted her unit, her intercollegiate team, and her class — her loss will be felt across USAFA,” said Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, Air Force Academy superintendent, in a written statement. “Our team is focused on providing support to Avery’s family, Cadet Squadron 38, the Track and Field team, and the entire Academy family.”
Academy first responders were called and attempted lifesaving measures, the statement said. The cause of death is under investigation.
Koonce was an athlete on the women’s track and field team. She was a standout runner for Thrall High School, according to the Taylor Press. During 2023, she placed second at the 2A state meet in the 100-meter dash and fourth in pole vault, the Press reported.
In a post last year on X, she celebrated her appointment to the academy.
“I am excited to announce my commitment to the United States Air Force Academy to run track & field! I am so beyond grateful for everyone who has helped me along in this journey. All Glory To God,” she posted on Dec. 28, 2023.
A full complement of support services including academy chaplains, mental health professionals, leaders and others are in place for cadets, faculty and staff, the statement said. The Academy delayed the start of classes Thursday and attendance was optional, spokesman Jeff Troth said.
Social media was full of posts of mourning for Koonce.
“God is crying tears of pain with us. Rest in peace,” someone wrote anonymously.
