Tatiana ‘LadyMay’ Mayfield, Ormao Dance Company to perform at ‘Swings and Strings’

What better way to spend an August evening than swaying to some jazzy blues at the park.

“Strings and Swings” will come to Bancroft Park on Friday and Panorama Park on Saturday as a free, live music event. The show will feature performances by vocalist Tatiana “LadyMay” Mayfield, the Ormao Dance Company and Smokebrush Players.

Mayfield, who is an assistant professor of contemporary popular music at the University of Denver, will be singing two original pieces and a Diana Ross medley. The medley will be played alongside a dance performance by the Ormao Dance Company.

“I absolutely love being able to perform with dancers. I don’t get a chance to do that very often. So that’s what I’m really looking forward to,” she said. “We’re gonna see them dance to some jazz and some other styles. So it’s gonna be really, really fun.”

Of her original pieces, Mayfield will be singing a song she wrote for her second album, “For You.” As one of the first songs she wrote and released, she describes it as a romantic love song.

“It makes you feel warm and fuzzy, like you would do anything for this person that you love. And I think when people hear it, it will put them in this space of romantic bliss, like in an old school kind of way,” she said.

Mayfield also will sing her piece “Forgive Me,” a more melancholy ballad from her third album about — as its name implies — forgiveness.

“It’s kind of an apology, sad ballad, but it was beautifully orchestrated by my very dear friend,” she said. “It’s just a gorgeous tune. When I recorded it, I played piano on it as well. So it’s written for piano and strings mainly.”

Perhaps most exciting for Mayfield is the chance to meet other artists and see the Springs for the first time.

“I’m excited about meeting new people, meeting some more people,” she said. “I’m excited about working with new string players and dancers and just seeing a new part of Colorado and experiencing the culture there, and making some great music.”
