Wheelchair-bound pedestrian killed in traffic crash in south Colorado Springs Monday, police say
A man in a wheelchair was killed in a crash while crossing a street in south Colorado Springs on Monday, according to the police department.
Officers responded to a 6:40 p.m. call about a traffic crash involving a pedestrian near the intersection of South Nevada and St. Elmo avenues. The man was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died. The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene.
An initial investigation determined that the victim was crossing St. Elmo Avenue, in the crosswalk, at the time of the crash. Neither speed nor impairment were considered factors in the crash, and no arrests were announced.
Monday’s crash was the city’s 35th traffic fatality of 2024, compared with 27 at the same time last year, police said.
It was also the second pedestrian-involved crash in as many days. On Sunday night, a person was struck by a vehicle while crossing Hancock Expressway. The vehicle, believed to be a dark-colored coupe or sedan, left the scene before police arrived.
