‘Good Samaritan’ killed in wrong-way crash on I-25 identified
The El Paso County Coroner’s Office has identified the “good Samaritan,” who was struck and killed as he tried to assist two drivers in the early morning wrong-way crash along Interstate 25 Sunday.
According to coroner’s office spokesperson Sandy Wilson, the victim has been identified as 64-year-old Joel Montalvo.
Previous reports by the Gazette state a vehicle was heading south in the northbound lanes of the interstate near Martin Luther King Jr. Bypass when it collided with another car.
Police said Montalvo was struck as he exited his vehicle to render aid to the drivers of the two cars that initially crashed head-on.
“While attempting to cross the street, they (Montalvo) were struck by another vehicle northbound,” A CSPD Lieutenant said.
According to officials, Montalvo and one of the drivers were pronounced deceased on the scene. The wrong-way driver was transported to a nearby hospital from the crash but died of his injuries.
“The investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing and will, in part, be based on lab results from the coroner’s office,” department spokesperson Ira Cronin, said Tuesday morning.
The two drivers of the head-on collision have yet to be identified by the coroner’s office, according to officials.
