The El Paso County Coroner’s Office has identified a man and woman who died in a potential murder-suicide, according to a Wednesday news release from the Sheriff’s Office.

A female, 25-year-old Esmeralda Contreras-Mata, and a male, 31-year-old Thabiso Makhafola, were found dead after a welfare check by the Sheriff’s Office in the 500 block of Cottonwood Drive of unincorporated Security-Widefield on May 16.

While the incident is being investigated as a potential murder-suicide, the official cause of the deaths will be determined by the Coroner’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office said in its news release there is no known threat to the community.
