Polis looks for solutions as Colorado reaches 8th case of vaping-related illness

Gov. Jared Polis has asked the state health department to look into ways to reduce teenage vaping, a Colorado media outlet is reporting.

The direction comes after the health department confirmed eight cases of vaping-related illness in Colorado, out of 500 national instances with 11 reported deaths. Two of Colorado’s cases involved just marijuana, three were just nicotine and two had both substances, reports CPR.

Polis told CPR that other solutions on the table, such as raising the legal purchase age for e-cigarettes to 21, will take time.

“We’ve directed our staff to find out what we can do immediately without having to wait for the legislature or the ballot box,” Polis said.

Changes are being made in other states and nationally to curb the problem. Earlier this month, President Trump proposed a ban on thousands of flavored nicotine products used in e-cigarettes, saying he wants to raise awareness of teenage vaping.

“People are going to watch what we’re saying, and parents are going to be a lot tougher with respect to their children,” he said.
