Take 10: KCME Caroling Quartet makes a fearsome musical foursome

A fearsome foursome will spread holiday love with Christmas music magic on our live Take 10 on the Gazette News Facebook platform at noon Friday, Dec. 22. I’m taking Take 10 on the road to the downtown Antlers hotel, where the backdrop is dressed to the nines in the Christmas spirit.

The KCME Caroling Quartet will be the featured Take 10 performer. This KCME group is much like the best of the best when it comes to Superbowls.

George Preston is the leader and tenor of this merry band of musicians. He is also general manager of KCME and Jazz 93.5. Bruce is an on-air personality, sings bass and last spring performed in the Mikado with the Opera Theatre of the Rockies. Audrey Bussanich, another on-air personality, sings soprano and was on an earlier live Take 10, singing original songs and playing keyboard. And Stephanie Brink, a Colorado native, is a mezzo-soprano pursuing a career in opera.

Preston has been singing more than 40 years. He started when he was 10 and recently finished the Holly and Ivy tour with the Air Force Academy Band. He said singing is in one’s blood.

“Part of the fun is coming together as a group like the KCME Caroling Quartet and finding a blend,” he said. “Caroling is not particularly demanding, but the fun is coming together with other musicians and finding the shape to the songs we know and love and making a performance that has never been heard before.”

He remembers one such performance in which everything that could go wrong did.

“I was performing in a rustic old art center in the western Massachusetts community of Sandisfield. The plumbing froze up, so no one could use the bathroom. One of the choir members put her foot into a floodboard in the old building, and a teen girl who was wearing Swedish headgear with lit candles accidentally set a large flower display on fire.”

An impromptu intermission bought time to expunge the smell of the fire by flinging open the center’s doors and windows on a freezing night.

“We did the whole program, including the Hallelujah Chorus, with an improvised orchestra of folk instruments, and it was one of the most memorable caroling experiences for me,” Preston said.

Don’t miss a minute of the KCME Caroling Quartet. Watch it live at the downtown Antlers hotel in Colorado Springs or live on our Gazette News Facebook platform during the noon hour Friday, Dec. 22.
