2015 Chevrolet Camaro LT: Old-school muscle car with cutting-edge advances

Thanks to features incorporated in 2014, Chevy went into 2015 focused on style, performance and efficiency, the fundamentals that made Camaro the segment’s best seller four years running, as well as Chevrolet America’s best-selling brand of performance cars.

The muscle car is all about design, performance and full-bodied engines.  With only a small number of American rivals, the 2015 Camaro is made for drivers wanting serious attitude with great handling, an ergonomic interior, and all-in-all fun ride.

Because the 5th generation Camaro is designed to accommodate a convertible model, its coupe-like design presents a sleek and arrogant profile with a unique grille and sporty front fascia incorporating new headlamps.  Modern rear fascia features diffuser styling and exhaust with one-piece taillights, and a body-color “shark-fin” antenna.

Complementing the exterior character, Camaro’s notable interior combine’s trendy features with traditional qualities.  Seating is comfortable and supportive offering plenty of head and shoulder space up front with relatively relaxing quarters in the rear.

When shopping for a sports car, interior space is commendable, especially when fused with the power and performance of Camaro.  “Drivers and passengers get a roomier and more comfortable cabin with the Camaro,” said Tommy Zirnhelt, Sales and Leasing Consultant with Al Serra Colorado.

Conventional Camaro details such as the squared-off instrument panel blend nicely with the 7-inch color touchscreen providing access to the MyLink infotainment system and a selection of smartphone-style apps.  An available head-up display projects instrument details, navigation, and audio on the windshield.

The 2015 Camaro offers eight trim levels, starting with V6-powered 1LS, 2LS, 1LT and 2LT. If you’re looking for a powerful V8 version, you’ll want the 1SS or 2SS, or maybe the distinguished ZL1 and Z/28. While the 1LS, 2LS and the top-of-the-line Z/28 only come with hardtops, the other trim levels can be either coupe or convertible.

Standard equipment, (on the 1LS base model) includes 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, keyless entry, air-conditioning, adjustable front seats with power recline, cruise control, Bluetooth phone connectivity, OnStar and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player, auxiliary audio input jack and satellite radio.

Stepping up to elevated trims gets extras like remote start (automatic transmission models only), 7-inch touchscreen MyLink smartphone app integration, and Bluetooth audio connectivity. Even more sophisticated packages get 19-inch alloy wheels, heated outside mirrors, rear parking sensors, leather upholstery, heated front seats, head-up display, rearview camera and a nine-speaker Boston Acoustics audio system. While a V8 engine, 20-inch alloy wheels, sport-tuned suspension, a limited-slip rear differential and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, are even higher up the trim line.

More performance-focused equipment can be selected too, such as a supercharged V8, adaptive suspension with magnetic dampers, Brembo brakes, distinctive 20-inch alloy wheels fitted with performance summer tires, and retuned power steering.

There is a laundry list of trim levels, options and upgrades that can be included according to the package and performance expectations of the buyer.  The list is extensive and allows buyers to be sure they select the Camaro that suits them.

Powered by a 3.6-liter V6, the 2015 Chevrolet Camaro LS and LT models produce 323 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. A manual six-speed transmission is standard, and a six-speed automatic is available.  The SS brings a 6.2-liter V8 that gererates an impressive 426 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque with a standard six-speed manual, and 400 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque from the automatic.

Boasting a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 rated at 580 horsepower and 556 pound-feet of torque, the Camaro ZL1 includes a standard six-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic.  And, last but not least, the Z/28 has a 7.0-liter V8 with 505 horsepower and 481 pound-feet of torque with only a six speed manual transmission.

Thanks to strategic reinforcements on the already strong body, the 2015 Camaro delivers impressive safety standings.  “It’s one of the safest cars on the lot,” said Zirnhelt. “It’s probably one of the safest sports cars out there.”

Standard safety features include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Also standard is the OnStar telematics system, providing automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, remote door unlocking, stolen vehicle assistance and turn-by-turn navigation.

In government crash tests, the Camaro coupe earned a top five-star rating overall, with five stars for front crash protection, five stars for side-impact protection and five stars for rollover.

Confident handling with accurate steering create a high-level performer that old-school muscle cars never were. Taking things up a notch, the ZL1’s combination of 580-hp supercharged V8, adaptive suspension and strong Brembo brakes, put it in contention with another level of competition.
