That elusive first road win couldn’t get much closer this weekend for Colorado College.

On Sunday, four Providence shots hit iron and unfortunately for CC, two bounced in, including the game-winner by John Gilmour with 6:50 left, during a 5-3 victory at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I.

CC pulled freshman goalie Chase Perry for the final 50.1 seconds but Brandon Tanev scored an empty-netter with 17.5 seconds left to clinch the nonconference sweep for No. 16 Providence and drop the Tigers to 0-11-1 on the road.

The loss before 1,950 fans came less than 21 hours after CC (3-13-1) was 31.1 seconds from securing its first point against a ranked foe in an overtime loss Saturday.

“We are learning as a team how fine a line it is (between winning and losing),” CC coach Mike Haviland said in a radio interview. “I thought it was a very evenly matched game. We just need to limit our mistakes.

Gilmour’s game-winner came only 74 seconds after CC sophomore Sam Rothstein tipped in a blast from defenseman Jaccob Slavin to tie it at 3-3 four seconds into the Tigers’ only power play.

“We know we don’t have the wins we want but we have grown by leaps and bounds,” Haviland said. “They have worked hard on their games and gotten better.”

The final CC goal with 10:56 left in the third kept up the back-and-forth nature of the Sunday game and series. The teams combined for nine goals in the third out of 17 scored this weekend.

CC junior Cody Bradley scored his team-high eighth for a 1-0 lead with 9:40 left in the first period. But that lead lasted only 121 seconds before Tom Parisi spun and fired a shot that clanged in off the crossbar past Perry (28 saves).

Tigers senior captain Peter Stoykewych scored off assists from Bradley (one goal, one assist) and Hunter Fejes (two assists) with 10:20 left in the second period to tie it at 2-2 and set up the decisive third.
