Cheeseman Canyon

Start at a clearly marked trail that climbs through a dry, ponderosa pine forest. In half a mile, the path crests at a low ridge and comes to a fork at a sign. Go right and begin the quarter-mile descent to the river.

For the next three miles, the path parallels the raucous current of South Platte River, eventually leading up to the Cheesman Reservoir Dam. Ambitious hikers can follow a road up to the reservoir, though the lake is closed until May as Denver Water does work on this dam.

Hikers don’t need to go the full distance to realize the charm of this canyon. A few minutes of walking leaves the road far behind. The granite canyon wall move in, cupping countless golden-green pools lined with granite boulders. These perches are the perfect place to watch the current and the dark, darting fish below.

Anglers regard the entire canyon as great trout fishing, and if the lower stretches are occupied- which they can be, even in winter- head upstream.

To get there: Take Colorado Highway 67 north from Woodland Park to Deckers. Go north on County Road 126 for two miles to a trailhead on the left.

Hike: Cheesman Canyon is a great spot for both hikers and anglers year-round. This hike in the mountains of Douglas County doesn’t go too high up. The trail follows the South Platte River through granite domes and some of the best fly-fishing in Colorado, a stretch of water that can be fished all winter, thanks to the warm water releases from Cheesman Reservoir.

Few hikers explore the spot, thinking it’s only a short fly-fisherman’s path. Nothing could be less true. The trail is long and full of great views.

Details: No bikes. For information call Pike National Forest, 636-1602. Dogs permitted on leash.

Trip Log: 1 to 3 boots – 8 miles round trip – 600 foot elevation gain
