The magazine worked with the American Insitute for Research to create the rankings. They included data on 21,776 public schools nationally. Final data awarded 4,877 of the nation’s top-performing schools with a gold, silver, or bronze designation.

The study looked at how the schools scored in math and reading assessments compared to other schools in the state, and then factored in such things as social and economic demographics. The top 25 percent were then judged on college readiness using International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement tests.

Twenty-two Colorado schools were in the silver category. The local schools are (with state rank): James Irwin Charter, 22; Air Academy, 24; Lewis-Palmer, 29; Doherty High School, #37, and Palmer High School, #38.

Another 48 Colorado high schools were given bronze, but were not given a numerical rank. Those in the Pikes Peak region receiving bronze were: Colorado Springs Early Colleges, Coronado, Ellicott and Harrison.
