D-11 board to vote on 2012-13 calendar

The Colorado Springs School District 11 board is expected to vote Wednesday on next school year’s calendar  — and it has a few changes.

The proposed calendar does not give students a day off for Veteran’s Day, and restores a shorter Thanksgiving vacation.

Deputy superintendent Mary Thurman said the calendar committee recommended not having Veteran’s Day off because it is relatively close to Thanksgiving, and it’s uncertain if it will be a week-long break on the 2012-13 school year.

The proposed calendar shows Thanksgiving vacation as Nov. 21-23, Wednesday through Friday.

In 2011, two additional days were added to the break with teachers and other D-11 staff members going unpaid because it was a budget-saving decision. Two furlough days attached to Thanksgiving are being considered again this year.

Most school districts in the region do not give a Veteran’s Day holiday to students. Last year, only D-11, Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8 and Widefield School District 3 observed the holiday. Many schools use that day to teach students about military service and veterans.

The number of instruction days for students remains the same, D-11 officials said.
