Colorado Springs coach who had sex with 13-year-old gets jail time, 20 years of intensive probation

A former cheerleading coach who admitted coercing sex from a 13-year-old pupil was sentenced Thursday to 90 days in jail and 20 years to life on intensive sex offender probation.

Mitchell Allen Greenstreet, 23, pleaded guilty in February to sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust.

In opting against a prison sentence, 4th Judicial District Judge Marla Prudek said she was bound by the law to impose a sentence comparable with the penalties in other, similar cases. She noted that probation or community supervision are generally imposed for such crimes.

Saying she was skeptical of Greenstreet’s claim that he didn’t know the girl’s age, the judge imposed a jail sentence without crediting Greenstreet for the 101 days he spent at the El Paso County jail awaiting sentence.

He is barred from having contact with anyone younger than 18 without advance permission from a probation officer and his treatment team, and he must register as a sex offender for life.

The penalty was imposed after the girl’s parents, whose names are being withheld, requested a prison sentence, saying their daughter has suffered sleeplessness and depression since the crimes were made public by authorities. Her grades have plummeted and she’s had to change schools twice in the past year, her father said.

Greenstreet’s attorney, Ted McClintock, said text messages exchanged between Greenstreet and the girl suggest they were involved in a romantic relationship. He said prosecutors wouldn’t have offered a plea deal otherwise.

“There’s more than enough evidence to say this was a consensual situation. That doesn’t make it right or even close to right,” he said.

Authorities say Greenstreet was a coach at a now-shuttered branch of Colorado Cheer Academy Allstars in Colorado Springs when he allegedly coerced sex from the girl, who was enrolled in private lessons.

The girl’s mother told police she found messages on the girl’s phone in which Greenstreet wrote about a prospective engagement and told her “how much he loved her,” an affidavit said.

Greenstreet, who lives in the Denver area, was arrested June 6. By then, he was no longer employed by the Cheer Academy, police said at the time.
