Teller County schools record lower CMAS scores

Teller County’s public school students predominantly decreased in reading, writing and math proficiency, according to spring test results.

The Colorado Department of Education on Aug. 19 released student growth results and achievement data from the spring Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS), PSAT and SAT assessments.

Colorado’s overall percentage of students meeting or exceeding math standards grew from 35.9% the prior year to 37.3%, continuing a four-year streak of improvement. Students’ performance on the English Language Arts (ELA) exam remained mostly flat, changing from 44.8% last year to 44.7%.

State education officials lauded bright spots in particular grades and subject areas but acknowledged the work left to be done.

“We should recognize the gains we are seeing, particularly in math and upper-elementary literacy, while being clear that we have much more work to do,” said Colorado Education Commissioner Susana Córdova in a news release.

“Too many students are still not meeting grade-level expectations, and longstanding gaps remain far too wide. Our challenge now is to build on what is working and accelerate progress — especially for the students who have the furthest to go.”

Woodland Park District RE-2, however, saw its math scores decrease from 37.7% in 2025 to 36.1% this spring, while ELA scores took a bigger drop from 50.9% to 41.5%, according to a Courier analysis of state data.

Among the bigger year-over-year changes occurred at the district’s K-8 grade charter school, Merit Academy, which saw its ELA scores drop from 62.8% to 45.1% and its math scores from 46.5% to 40.9%.

The district’s highest-performing school last spring was Summit Elementary, though its ELA scores decreased 10.5% to 48.5% and its math scores 1% to 42.6%.

Cripple Creek-Victor RE-1 improved its cumulative math scores by 1.4% over last spring, but still ranked among the lowest-performing districts in the Pikes Peak region at 10.4% and 18.9% for ELA.

The Courier’s Michael Braithwaite provided the data analysis of Colorado Measures of Academic Success test scores.
