New CDOT videos explain Colorado road laws
The Colorado Department of Transportation released a three-part video series last week explaining several traffic laws that have changed in recent years, from the statewide hands-free device ban that took effect in 2025 to the 2024 motorcycle lane-filtering rule and expanded move-over protections, according to a statement from the agency.
The short “Road Laws” episodes are available on CDOT’s YouTube channel and cover driver safety, lane use and sharing the road with bicyclists and pedestrians.
Episode 1 reviews the hands-free device ban, the longstanding expressed consent requirement for chemical tests in impaired-driving cases and winter traction and chain rules on mountain corridors.
Episode 2 covers the left-lane passing requirement on highways with speed limits of 65 mph and higher, the move-over law that now applies to any vehicle stopped with hazard lights and motorcycle lane filtering between fully stopped vehicles at 15 mph or less under a statute that expires in 2027.
Episode 3 addresses the three-foot clearance rule when passing cyclists, the 2022 safety-stop law allowing cyclists to treat stop signs as yields and proceed after stopping at red lights when clear, pedestrian crosswalk rules and the 2023 requirement to yield to large vehicles already circulating in roundabouts.
CDOT encourages drivers to watch the videos and review additional information at codot.gov. The agency said clearer understanding of the rules can help reduce crashes and keep roads open during storms.
