Trial for Tri-Lakes couple accused of defrauding millions expected in 2027

An Tri-Lakes area couple accused of defrauding their customers out of more than $2 million will not see trial until 2027, possibly three years after their arrests.

Dwight Mulberry, 55, and Joni Mulberry, 43, face a total of 28 fraud and theft charges. The two appeared in court Aug. 17, where pretrial readiness hearings were set for Feb. 8. Trial dates have yet to be scheduled.

The trials were supposed to begin in March 2025 but have seen several delays.

Authorities believe the couple were stealing from customers through their company, Craftsman Homes and Interiors, from 2021 to 2024.

Court records indicate several charges were dropped after the pair’s preliminary hearings in early 2025, including all 18 money laundering counts.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office identified 19 alleged victims of the couple. Craftsman Homes and Interiors, which operated out of an office in Woodmoor, did not have a Better Business Bureau accreditation at the time.

The BBB site states the company, which had been in business since 2017, filed for bankruptcy in March 2023, listing “over 170 creditors with claims totaling at least $2.1 million.” In addition, the website also states that the complaints came from unpaid subcontractors and homeowners. One customer allegedly reported they lost $150,000 “without receiving a house in return.”

The pair bonded out of the El Paso County jail shortly following their arrests in March 2024 after posting separate $25,000 bond amounts.
