Backpack Fence is back
For the third year, Divide Mountain Explorers will be spearheading their local effort with the Backpack Fence, a back-to-school initiative in Teller County. It provides free backpacks and school supplies to local children by hanging pre-packed bags on a fence, allowing families to discreetly walk up and take what they need, or leave donated items.
This year the giving fences will be located at Cripple Creek and Victor School located at 410 N. B Street, Cripple Creek, Victor Elks Lodge, 367 3rd Street Victor, and Kenpo Karate, 735 Gold Hill Place in Woodland Park.
Sponsors so far are the Lion’s Club, Kenpo Karate, Fidelity Title in Woodland Park and Colorado Phoenix Project.
“We can take money donations, school supplies, or backpacks. Basically, anything we can give to help get kids get their school year off to a good start,” said Mike Demuth leader of the Divide Mountain Explorers.
Last year 287 backpacks were given out to those who needed them. This year, the project begins Aug. 1 and will end when all the supplies are depleted.
This is a community service project by the Divide Mountain Explorers, not a fundraiser for the group.
Anyone wanting to donate or sponsor is asked to contact Mike Demuth at 719-661-8079.
